You Don't Have to Give Up Cooked Foods to Start the Raw Food Diet
If you've ever experienced eating raw foods, going on a juice fast or some type of vegetarian diet, then you might agree that eating raw foods is a good idea. But, does the thought of abandoning all of your favorite foods and eating habits seem like more than you can handle?
Okay then, don't! If you decide to change what you eat with an all or nothing mentality, you won't last long on the raw food diet. I'm sure that you've heard the old saying, "Everything in moderation." But so often, we only apply that to what we eat and not what we're trying to avoid eating.
Don't think of trying a raw food diet as turning your back on the way you've been eating. Think about it; you've learned to eat in a certain fashion, and you've been doing it that way for years. Instead of giving up all of the foods you enjoy, try adding raw foods to your present way of eating. Our minds are such amazing things. When we begin to add in foods like raw vegetables, sprouts, fruits and juices, we won't be as hungry.
Also, once we change what we're eating and start feeling more energetic and refreshed, we're not so susceptible of giving in to impulsive eating. If you want a steak, eat a steak. And don't feel guilty about it. Sit, relax, and enjoy it! But in doing so, you still have the option of improvement. Choose a healthier cut of meat, one with less fat or decide on fresh fish. Once you start eating raw foods and notice how good you feel on them and how much more energy you have, that steak just won't taste as good to you. Over a period of time, you'll soon phase cooked foods out of your diet.
Most importantly, you'll want to make sure that you're getting enough of the right kinds of nutrition. Your body has become accustomed to eating a certain variety of foods. Your body draws from these foods what it needs to function. When we drastically change what we eat, out bodies go into a state of shock. Eating raw foods doesn't mean eating only raw foods. Allow your body to adjust to this new way of eating.
For instance, watermelon is good for you, but it's not enough to only eat watermelon. You'll need to do a little research into which raw foods have the essential proteins, vitamins, and minerals that your body needs. You'll also want to learn which combinations of food you need to eat to get enough protein.
Raw food eating is intended to nourish your body in a completely different way, but when transitioning to a plant-based only diet, just being raw isn't enough. You want to gradually change what you eat to be in balance, and you need to balance the raw foods you're eating for proper nutrition. Don't let this scare you away from a raw food diet. It will just take time to learn how to eat differently. You'll have to relearn your body and pay attention to how certain foods affect it. Over time, you'll take cues from your body on what foods to eat.
One easy way to trick your body into changing what you eat is by incorporating new fruits and vegetables into your diet. Perhaps you could try a new piece of fruit and a new vegetable once a week. Buy something you have never tried before. You will find a whole new world of tastes and textures that you never knew existed. If you continue to eat this way, you will feel more and more deterred from eating fast food.
