The Medifast diet works on the principle that it makes use of fats stored in the body from ketones instead of carbohydrates. This way fats are more used for energy than are carbohydrate sources causing an effective strategy to burn calories from fat.

The regular foods are replaced by foods low in carbohydrate and calories. The Medifast Company provides these replacement foods. A dieter may choose from many meal replacements. A regimen includes favorite snacks such as shakes, oats, chilies, puddings and the like. A dieter with diabetes is offered a choice specifically formulated for the disease. Ideally, the plan is to provide from 800 to 1,000 calories a day. When weight loss is evident, a green and lean meal is advised which usually consist of a 5-7 ounces of lean meat serving and 2 cups raw vegetables or 1 ½ cup cooked vegetables. Special dietary formulations are available especially for diabetics.

If a significant weight loss is to be achieved for a longer time, the patient during the weight loss phase is advised to have the supervision of a health care provider. Before starting the diet, certain precautions are observed. Some candidates who have the following illnesses are not eligible to adapt the diet such as those with serious medical conditions of the heart as in myocardial infarction, serious kidney and liver diseases, those under 18 years old or over 65 years old, those on medications especially with diabetes, and are more than 50 pounds overweight.

Physicians have recommended the diet to their patients with a high success rate. One advantage of the Medifast program is its medical supervision, which makes it safer for the patients to use. More than a million persons have used the diet safely with good results. It has also been involved in research and in institutions to decrease the epidemic of obesity.

Honestly, if a regimen is supervised by nutritionists and physicians with effective results and impact, then it is healthy. Although there are complaints about the diet usually due to relapses, these are minimal. As in every program, not everyone is suited to adapt to it.
